The detailing industry has grown enormously but the term “professional detailer” isn’t necessarily a guarantee of experience, skill or quality. A professional detailer should be able to assess your vehicle properly, explain what it needs and why, manage your expectations and demonstrate that they have the knowledge, environment and processes required to work safely on your vehicle.
A polished Instagram page, expensive products or owning a machine polisher doesn’t necessarily tell you any of that. If you’re trusting someone with your vehicle, particularly for paint correction, ceramic protection or more extensive work, there are several things worth looking for before deciding who to hand your keys to.
They Want to Understand Your Vehicle Before Promising Results
One of the first signs of a professional approach is someone who asks questions before giving you answers. Every vehicle is different, and factors such as paint condition, previous repairs, scratches, swirl marks, oxidation and other defects can all influence what can safely and realistically be achieved. Your expectations matter too because the result one owner wants may be completely different from another.
A professional detailer should therefore want to understand the condition of the vehicle and the result you’re looking for before recommending a treatment. This is exactly why we have an inspection process at Eryx Auto Styling. We’re not interested in prescribing the same treatment to every car that comes through the door; we want to understand the vehicle, its condition and its owner first.
They Can Explain What They’re Doing and Why
You shouldn’t need to understand every technical aspect of detailing to have confidence in the individual working on your vehicle. A good professional should be able to explain what they’ve identified, what they recommend doing about it and why they believe that approach is appropriate. If there are limitations to what can safely be achieved, they should be honest about those too.
Professional detailing is a skilled service and the price should reflect the expertise, experience, time and level of workmanship involved. When you’re comparing services, it’s important to understand what sits behind the quotation rather than simply comparing the final figures. The preparation involved, the experience of the person carrying out the work, the time dedicated to your vehicle, the working environment and the standard of the finished result all contribute to the value of the service.
They Don’t Promise to Remove Every Scratch
It can be tempting to assume that the best detailer is the individual promising to remove every single defect but this isn’t necessarily the case. Paint correction involves carefully removing a microscopic amount of the clear coat to reduce or eliminate visible defects which means there are limits to how far correction should safely be taken.
Some scratches and defects may simply be too deep to remove through machine polishing alone. Continuing to chase a defect isn’t always in the best interests of the vehicle and an experienced detailer should recognise when another repair method would be more appropriate. Sometimes one of the clearest signs of professionalism is knowing when to stop rather than promising something that shouldn’t safely be achieved.
Look Beyond the Before-and-After Photos
The environment in which detailed paint correction and ceramic coating work takes place can make a considerable difference. Appropriate lighting allows paint defects to be properly identified and assessed while a suitable studio environment gives the detailer the conditions required to carry out correction and protection work consistently.
At our Beckenham studio, we use specialist lighting to expose paint defects that can be difficult to see under everyday lighting conditions. This allows us to assess what is actually happening with the paintwork rather than relying solely on what appears visible outside, where weather and natural light can easily disguise imperfections.
Ask About Their Experience
Experience matters, particularly when someone is carrying out work on your paintwork that cannot simply be undone. A professional should be comfortable discussing their background, the type of work they regularly undertake and the experience they have working with different vehicles, paint finishes and defects.
At Eryx Auto Styling, our Lead Detailer and Founder Erik previously worked as an in-house detailer for McLaren where working around high-value vehicles and exacting standards formed part of his everyday environment. That doesn’t mean someone needs to have worked for a supercar manufacturer to be a good detailer but you should feel comfortable asking about their experience before deciding whether they’re the right person to work on your vehicle.
Professional Detailing Isn’t About Who Uses the Most Expensive Products
The products a detailer uses are important but they’re ultimately tools in the hands of the person carrying out the work. Buying an expensive ceramic coating doesn’t automatically make someone an experienced coating installer, just as owning professional tools doesn’t automatically make someone an experienced mechanic.
Preparation, technique, knowledge and judgement all influence the quality of the finished result. This is particularly important with ceramic coatings because the appearance of the vehicle after application is heavily influenced by what happened before the coating was applied. If paintwork requires correction or additional preparation, simply covering it with an expensive coating isn’t going to resolve the defects underneath.
They Should Be Willing to Tell You When Something Isn’t Necessary
Professional advice shouldn’t always result in you spending more money. There will be occasions when a client requests something that isn’t necessary, won’t produce the result they’re expecting or simply isn’t the best use of their budget and a professional should be comfortable explaining that and recommending a more appropriate alternative.
Equally, detailing isn’t the solution to every defect. An area may be better suited to SMART repair, paintless dent removal, minor bodywork or another specialist treatment rather than repeatedly trying to correct something through detailing alone. The objective should be achieving the right outcome for the vehicle, not simply adding another service to the invoice.
They Care About What Happens After You Leave
Professional detailing shouldn’t end the moment you collect your vehicle. If you’ve invested in paint correction, ceramic protection or PPF, the way the vehicle is looked after afterwards can have a significant effect on its appearance and the longevity of the work carried out.
A professional detailer should therefore explain how to maintain the vehicle correctly and what ongoing care may be required. This is particularly important with ceramic coatings which can offer excellent protection but don’t make a vehicle maintenance-free, scratch-proof or incapable of becoming contaminated. If you’re being promised otherwise, it’s worth asking more questions.
Price Reflects More Than the Time Spent on Your Vehicle
There can be a significant difference in price between detailing businesses but there can also be a significant difference in what you’re actually paying for. A professional detailer’s pricing isn’t based solely on the number of hours your vehicle spends in the studio. You’re also paying for years of experience, specialist knowledge, professional equipment, an appropriate working environment and the judgement required to know how your particular vehicle should be treated.
At Eryx Auto Styling, our pricing reflects the standard of service we provide and the experience behind it. Our Lead Detailer and Founder, Erik’s background includes working as an in-house detailer for McLaren and that level of experience and attention to detail forms part of the standard we continue to work to today.
When comparing quotations, the question shouldn’t simply be “Who can do it for less?” It should be “What am I actually receiving for my investment?” Two quotations may appear to describe the same service on paper while representing very different levels of preparation, expertise, workmanship and aftercare.
Choosing professional detailing purely on price can ultimately become expensive if poor technique creates additional defects or work has to be corrected later. Your vehicle is an investment and the standard of the person entrusted to work on it should be part of that decision.
Choose Expertise, Not Just a Price
Before handing over your vehicle, take some time to ask questions, look at previous work and understand the process being recommended. A professional should be able to explain not only what they intend to do but why they believe it’s the right approach for your particular vehicle.
At Eryx Auto Styling, we don’t position ourselves as a budget detailing service nor do we compete to provide the lowest quotation. Our pricing reflects the experience, knowledge, workmanship and level of attention we bring to every vehicle. For clients who value those things, the decision is about much more than finding someone who can perform a service for the lowest possible price.
